Languages

At Sulhamstead & Ufton Nervet CE Primary School, our aim is to nurture early linguistic confidence and spark children’s curiosity about the wider world. Learning a modern foreign language at SUN lays strong foundations for future study at KS3 and beyond, helping pupils recognise the value of communicating in more than one language.

French is taught progressively across KS2 so that learners develop an understanding of how another language can be used to communicate in different ways and for different purposes. Children explore how language is shaped by time, place and cultural context, deepening their appreciation of how people live and communicate in French‑speaking countries.

Through our French curriculum, pupils learn to express themselves, share ideas and take part in simple conversational exchanges. They develop increasing confidence and fluency, learning to ask and answer questions, participate in discussions and improve the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation over time.

Our teaching of French is enriched by SUN’s strong focus on international learning. International mindedness is central to language learning: pupils are encouraged to recognise cultural differences, show respect for the traditions of French‑speaking communities and understand the importance of language in connecting people across the world.

Our aspiration is that children at SUN develop a genuine interest in learning another language, gain a deeper understanding of global cultures and feel inspired to explore and experience other countries in the future.

To be successful, learners must:

  • develop their speaking and listening skills in French;

  • use appropriate vocabulary and subject-specific terminology

  • read and show understanding of French words, phrases and simple writing

  • write in French to describe people, places and things, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt

  • Connect learning within different aspects of French and between French and other subjects (geography and history)

  • develop the confidence to use and apply their primary language learning in KS3
