Computing at Sulhamstead & Ufton Nervet CE Primary School
At Sulhamstead & Ufton Nervet CE Primary School, technology is woven throughout our curriculum. Children use a wide range of IT hardware and software every day as part of their learning, and Computing provides the dedicated space to teach the essential skills and knowledge they need to grow, communicate, work and live confidently in a world where technology is constantly evolving.
Our Computing curriculum ensures that pupils develop a secure understanding of how to use digital technologies safely and responsibly, while also learning how technology can be used to create, evaluate and explore both the real and digital world. We recognise the significant role technology plays in the lives of pupils, staff, parents, governors and the wider community, and we aim to provide safe, motivating and inspiring opportunities that raise standards across the curriculum. Our goal is for every member of our school community to develop the digital skills needed to approach new technologies with confidence and enthusiasm.
As a result of our Computing curriculum, children at SUN become creative, independent learners who develop a healthy relationship with technology. They learn that technology is an integral part of modern life and that understanding how it works—and how to use it well—is key to their future. Computing at SUN involves problem‑solving, collaboration, learning from mistakes and refining solutions, helping pupils build resilience and adaptability.
Our curriculum, supported by resources from Barefoot and Teach Computing, is carefully sequenced to ensure logical progression. Each concept builds on prior learning, with regular opportunities for pupils to consolidate and reapply their skills. Units are designed to provide challenge, variety and high engagement, with a strong emphasis on developing digital vocabulary, core computing skills and key computational concepts.
E‑safety is paramount at SUN. We model and teach children to use technology positively, responsibly and safely. Our curriculum supports the aims of the government’s Internet Safety Strategy and the UK Council for Child Internet Safety (UKCCIS) framework, helping pupils stay safe online, make positive contributions and understand how to manage online risks.
Our aspiration is that children become responsible, confident and active digital citizens who can use technology to solve problems and improve their lives in an ever‑changing digital world.
To be successful in Computing at SUN, learners must:
-
Be safe and responsible digital citizens — evaluate online information, understand risks and know when and how to seek help
-
Experience a range of technologies — use a variety of digital programs, devices and tools
-
Design and debug programs — create, test and refine code using visual, block‑based and text‑based languages
-
Apply computing to real‑world contexts — understand how technology impacts their future lives and use it meaningfully
-
Create using technology — use digital tools confidently to produce content across the curriculum
-
Use accurate computing vocabulary — communicate ideas and understanding using subject‑specific terminology
